Raising high school students' awareness of equality and violence prevention

Context

Gender stereotypes, sexist and sexual violence, and a lack of information on sexual health are major prevention issues from adolescence onward.

As part of the Génération Égalité programme, I took part in awareness-raising sessions with tenth-grade students in several high schools across the Occitanie region, using a participatory approach based on dialogue and peer-led prevention.

My role

Civic service volunteer, peer-led prevention (LMDE): co-facilitating sessions with tenth-grade students in Occitanie.

My main contributions

Training in peer-led prevention

Initial training with our supervisor, followed by a joint training session in Carcassonne bringing together volunteers from several organisations.

• Better understanding the issues around gender equality
• Preparing to address sensitive topics with a teenage audience
• Learning facilitation methods suited to peer-led prevention

Preparing and facilitating sessions

In pairs, across several high schools in Occitanie.

• Gender equality, gender stereotypes, consent
• Sexist and sexual violence, contraception, sexual health
• Creating spaces for dialogue where students could ask questions and share their views

Results

• Took part in an initial cross-organisation training in Carcassonne
• Co-facilitated sessions in several high schools across Occitanie
• Helped create spaces for dialogue around sensitive topics

What this experience taught me

This experience taught me that the quality of a session relies as much on its preparation as on its delivery, and that prevention means creating a space of trust in which young people can build their own thinking.
